Dave Oliphant: Un poeta gringo en Chiloé/A gringo poet in CHILOÉ

In 2007 Dave and María visited the archipelago of Chiloé. There he learned about the very active group of Chilean poets who had been inspired by Carlos Trujillo, a native of Chiloé who had founded a poetry workshop called Aumen. But at that time Carlos was teaching at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, so Dave did not meet him until 2022 on a return trip to Chiloé.

In 2021 Dave sent a copy of volume two of his Travels of a Texas Poet to Carlos, who was living again in Chiloé. Carlos responded that in 1982 he and Mario Contreras, a fellow Chilote poet, had each acquired a copy of Dave's bilingual anthology of Texas poets, Washing the Cow's Skull (1981), through the U.S. Embassy in Chile. When Dave returned to Chiloé in 2022, he met the Chilote poets pictured
